Cover. The brilliant art of ukiyo-e , pictures of the floating (or fleeting) world, is said by many authorities to have died in 1858, the year of Hiroshige’s death and the ‘surrender of Japan’ to the urgings of Westernization. John Scott, an anthropology and Asian studies scholar (B.A. and M.A. from University of Pennsylvania), who is a keen lover of Japanese prints, surveys the masterly work of the Meiji and Taisho periods, like the print of the tattooed samurai on the cover by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, one of the last great printmakers at the turn of the century
