Cover. Gold head of a Buddha, after the seventh-to eleventh-century Dvaravati style of Thailand. The first historical period of Thailand (as well as the period when the first-known style of sculpture emerged) was the Dvaravati, named after a state founded by the Mon people. Sculptors of the Dvaravati kingdom, converted to Buddhism before the Khmers subjugated it, sought to copy Buddhist iconography from models of Gupta India. The results were often un-Indian Buddhas and bodhisattvas with boyish features, an attribute of Thailand's sculpture that has survived to this day.
