MAY 2000

$35.00

VOLUME 31- NUMBER 5

Jenny So's essay relates to the exhibition 'Music in the Age of Confucius', which opened at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington, DC on 30 April. Also on view in the gallery are some of the works donated by the late Paul Singer. Thomas Lawton discusses Singer's life and his passion for early Chinese art. A fifth century lacquer box, recently acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, gives Maxwell Hearn an opportunity to examine early pictorial representation in China, and Rose Kerr presents some new findings regarding the origin of famille-rose enamels. Release of this issue also conincides with an exhibition at the San Diego Museum of Art featuring Indian court paintings from the Edwin Binney 3rd Collection, highlights of which are discussed by Kavita Singh. Pratapaditya Pal traces the provenance of a monumental thangka which was brough by Norton Simon in 1974. Michael Martin's interview with Tseng Yuho gives an insight into her eventful life, and in this month's commentary, Bob Hudson elaborates on criticism of recent renovations at Bagan in Myanmar.
