One of these is the Teyyattam, performed in the rapidly vanishing ancestor worship cult of Teyyam in northern Kerala. Teyyattam performers actually become “teyyams,” Hindu gods. The dancers traditionally come from specifically low castes and lose their exalted position as deities worshipped by even the high-caste members of the audience when the performance cum ritual is over.
