Cover. A guardia civil with his tough little pony is drawn from a nineteenth century portfolio of Manila by J.A. Karuth, a German artist who visited the Spanish colonial city in 1858. This gendarme Karuth met in the outskirts of Manila, while on a sketching trip. He is heavily armed with shotgun and dagger and looks little different from the bandits that then infested the Philippine countryside. From the Museum of Philippine History and Iconography, Manila.
