Suki Seokyeong Kang: Mountain—Hour—Face

  • McNay Art Museum 6000 North New Braunfels Avenue San Antonio, Texas, 78209 United States (map)

South Korean artist Suki Seokyeong Kang transformed sculpture, painting, textiles and poetry into immersive environments shaped by rhythm and the natural world. Suki Seokyeong Kang: Mountain—Hour—Face presents nearly 40 works created between 2014 and 2024, marking the first solo exhibition by a South Korean artist in the McNay’s history. Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and adapted for the McNay by Lauren Thompson, Curator of Exhibitions, the exhibition invites visitors into a space where works hang from the ceiling, occupy the floor and walls, and shift in response to movement through the galleries.

Among the highlights are two hwamunseok mats, handwoven from dried plants, making their United States debut. These works reference chunaeungmu, a Korean court dance dating to the late 18th century in which a solitary performer danced upon a small reed mat for the king. Suspended from the ceiling, they sit alongside other celebrated bodies of work: delicate aluminum mobiles from Kang’s “Mountain — hours” series, paired with poems that bring the artist’s voice into the space, and sculptures from her “Tender Meander” series, which evoke human figures through abstract forms. “Grandmother Tower,” on loan from a Dallas-area collection, anchors the exhibition’s exploration of presence and personality. Visitors move through the galleries much as they might move through a landscape, discovering shifting perspectives and moments of reflection along the way.
