VOLUME 43 - NUMBER 8

Founded in 1952, the Shanghai Museum is renowned for its approach to international cooperation and scholarship, and its focus on presenting important artworks to a wider audience. Our final issue of 2012 is devoted to two events being held to mark the 60th anniversary of this singular institution: ‘Masterpieces of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy in American Collections’, held in collaboration with four US institutions, and ‘Splendors in Smalt: Art of Yuan Blue-and-white Porcelain’.

In our introductory interview, Joyce Zhang Hui talks to Director Chen Xiejun, Vice Director Chen Kelun and Director of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy Shan Guolin about the Shanghai Museum, past and present, and the two exhibitions, while Maxwell K. Hearn, Hao Sheng, Anita Chung and Ling-en Lu take a closer look at the US museums’ relationship with Chinese art. Meanwhile, Li Zhongmou presents a comprehensive summary of recent scholarship on Yuan blue-and-white.

Also in this month’s issue, Orientations talks to Yahoo! founder Jerry Yang about an exhibition of Chinese calligraphy from his collection, at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Finally, Nancy Berliner comments on intellectual property issues in the field of Chinese art history.
