VOLUME 34 - NUMBER 3

Solidarity among museums, fair organizers, auction houses and dealers will ensure a spectacle of Asian art in New York this spring, despite current uncertainties. Three features in this issue are devoted to Japan Society's exhibition, 'Transmitting the Forms of Divinity: Early Buddhist Art from Korea and Japan' (9 April-22 June). Kang Woobang traces the development of iconography in Korean sculpture; Konno Toshifumi examines three wood images from Daian-ji; and Alexandra Monroe discusses some of the issues raised by this challenging project. On 8 March, the new Asian art galleries will open at the Norton Museum of Art in Florida. John Finlay introduces highlights of the Chinese art collection and talks to E. Robert Hunter about his tenure as director of the museum. Shawn Eichman's article provides insight into topics to be explored in the symposium accompanying the ongoing exhibition 'Treasures from an Unknown Reign: Shunzhi Porcelain' at the University of Virginia Art Museum. To mark New York's Asia Week, there are previews of gallery exhibitions, the Arts of Pacific Asia Show and the International Asian Art Fair. Finally, Michael Martin's commentary addresses the much-debated issue of cultural patrimony.
