VOLUME 43 - NUMBER 5

Our June issue taps into pioneering fieldwork and fresh scholarship on far-reaching aspects of Buddhist art. Rob Linrothe analyses the stylistic relationship of the recently discovered murals at Phugtal monastery, Zangskar with those of the Gyantse Kumbum. Natasha Kimmet and Gerald Kozicz conduct an in-depth study on representations of the Buddhist deity of longevity, Ushnishavijaya, in Ladakh.

Paul A. Lavy positions a Lopburi Buddha in the Honolulu Museum of Art within the context of similar examples in other collections. Olaf Czaja reflects on the life of Baron Speck von Sternburg and his donation of Buddhist artworks to the Museum für Völkerkunde in Leipzig. Meanwhile, Helen Ibbitson Jessup catches up with Pascal Royère, the architect who led the successful conservation effort at the Baphuon, one of the grandest examples of Khmer architecture.

In other features, Bruce Doar pays tribute to Frank Uytterhaegen, a key figure in Beijing’s contemporary art scene. François Louis reviews Jonathan Hay’s book Sensuous Surfaces, while Frank Feltens discusses artworks at Tokyo National Museum currently on loan from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Finally, Puay-peng Ho comments on heritage issues in Hong Kong in light of the impasse over the future of Ho Tung Gardens.
