VOLUME 30 - NUMBER 10

The Asian art collection at the Honolulu Academy of Arts is currently undergoing reinstallation: existing galleries are being refitted and new ones created, greatly increasing the display area and underlining the strength of the holdings. This issue highlights various aspects of the collection: Julia White focuses on some of the important examples of Chinese and Japanese paintings and Buddhist art, paying tribute to Anna Rice Cooke, who founded the Academy with her personal collection; Paul Varley discusses the Academy's Rakuchu Rakugai-zu screens, and examines changes of emphasis with reference to a number of other examples; Nancy Dowling gives an overview of some of the notable Hindu stone and bronze images, textiles and paintings that will be on view in a new gallery devoted to South Asia; and Virginia Mann presents examples from The Christensen Fund's collection of Indonesian textiles, which is on loan to the Academy. Finally George Sexton, designer of the new galleries, reveals in an interview the challenges of working on this and other Asian art projects.
