Liu Yang. Emblems of Auspice: 4th Century BCE Lacquers from Jiuliandun

Situated in Zhaohu village in Zaoyang city, Hubei province, Jiuliandun takes its name from the surrounding topography, with the name connoting ‘nine mounds in succession’. During a survey carried out in 1958, these mounds were identified as tumuli of aristocrats of the Chu state, which was one of the most important of the vassal states contending for power in China during the Warring States period (475–221 BCE).
