Buying art on vacation is a hallowed tradition. No doubt Gilded Age Americans doing the ‘Grand Tour’ of Europe came home with their fair share of impostors to hang alongside their Impressionists. But more than just a memento of a vacation to exotic lands, ‘travel art’ (for want of a better term), when done thoughtfully, can also serve as a window into the aspirations of a people in a way that books and news articles cannot match.
