Sarah Handler. China's Ancient Gaze in Hervé Van der Straeten's Art
Born in 1965 in the southern suburbs of Paris, Hervé Van der Straeten was educated at the École Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. While a student, he started designing jewelry, and in 1985 he began receiving international recognition with his first collection. Leading Paris fashion designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix, and Jean Paul Gaultier asked him to design jewelry, and he created other items for luxury brands, including Dior’s iconic J’adore perfume bottle. Soon he concentrated more on making furniture, mirrors, and lighting and in 1999 opened his own gallery in the Marais neighbourhood of Paris, where he displays his various creations in thematic exhibitions that show the connections between his different arts.
