Bringing Life to the Galleries of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco
Now entering its sixth decade as North America’s only civic museum dedicated solely to the arts and cultures of Asia, in 2012 the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco embarked on a major renovation and expansion project. With the vision of making the museum’s mission of connecting art to life more of a reality, the curators and designers directed their attention to singling out a series of masterpieces within the collections. At the end of November 2019, the renovations were completed and those galleries that had been closed for over a year reopened to the public. Working systematically floor by floor and gallery by gallery, visitors’ journey through the collections has been reimagined, with the selected masterpieces serving as points of entry into the larger narratives and historical richness of the various collections.
