Shawn Eichman.Curator's Choice: Saints and Sinners: Divine Sculpture
The challenge to select a favourite artwork is a difficult one. My favourites change from day to day, depending on the project I’m working on. At the moment, however, Europe is on my mind.
As I am preparing to travel there in a few days, the wallpaper on my phone is currently the theologian Augustine of Hippo’s (340–430) sepulchre in San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro, a church in Pavia in northern Italy. The sepulchre was built centuries after Augustine’s death, in 1362, and the story of how (and indeed whether) Augustine’s remains ended up in Pavia is an incredible one—but that’s a story for another day.
