A Medley of Brushes: Collaborative Paintings in the Feinberg Collection

Richly diverse in its representation of Edo period (1603–1868) painting, the Feinberg Collection includes a group of remarkable early modern works that embody various forms of collaborative endeavour, serving as a reminder that the making of art was by no means a solitary exercise. The paintings, each of which includes more than one signature, signal that multiple brushes were involved and that it was important for each artist to be explicitly identified for their individual contributions. Taking various forms and formats, these joint works also underscore the role of unseen participants such as patrons, coordinators and mounters.
