Houma Bronzes in The British Museum: A Technical Study

The so-called ‘Houma bronzes’ were cast during the late period of the Jin state and are associated with the Eastern Zhou period foundry in present-day Houma, Shanxi province, which was excavated in the late 1950s. The British Museum has a number of remarkable late Jin bronzes in its holdings that are likely to have been cast at Houma. This article discusses the findings of a 2018 project to investigate the construction technique and alloy composition of six bronzes from the museum’s collection that are believed to have been made in the Houma foundry.
