Monika Bincsik. 'Kyoto: Capital of Artistic Imagination'
Kyoto was Japan’s political and cultural capital for more than a millennium before the dawn of the modern era. Until about the 15th century, it was also among the world’s largest cities. The exhibition ‘Kyoto: Capital of Artistic Imagination’ at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (July 2019– January 2020) will focus on turning points in Kyoto’s history up to the late Edo period and examine the influence of political changes and transitions on the arts. The author sheds light on this history in her discussion of works from the Met’s collection on view in the exhibition.
