Sonali Dhingra. Compassion and Wisdom Personified: Some Lesser-known Buddhist Sculptures from Odisha

Focusing on sculptures of Tara and Bhrikuti in both museum collections and archaeological contexts, this article discusses the popularity of female divinities in Odisha's Buddhist monastic and temple complexes. Large-scale, independently carved sculptures from Eastern India demonstrate the elevated position of female Buddhist divinities as foci of devotion, with separate, dedicated shrines; however, when compared to regions such as Bihar and Bengal, sculptures from Odisha have largely been overlooked.
