Janice Katz. Two Floating Worlds: Ukiyo-e Prints and Paintings of the Kaigetsudo School

In conjunction with the exhibition ‘Painting the Floating World: Ukiyo-e Masterpieces
from the Weston Collection’, on view at the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) from 4
November 2018 to 27 January 2019, Janice Katz examines the commercial and studio
practices of the Kaigetsudo school, and the reception in the West of the school’s
paintings and prints. Kaigetsudo school prints have long been sought after; four
examples in the AIC are a highlight of the collection. By contrast, Kaigetsudo school
paintings have generally not been similarly prized until recently. The two examples in
the Weston Collection make clear their impact and importance.
