James Beattie and Richard Bullen.The Rewi Alley Collection and Cultural Diplomacy: A New Perspective on China-New Zealand Relations

Rewi Alley, one of the so called 'Ten International Friends of China' who lived in China for sixty years, donated over 1,400 objects to Canterbury Museum, which houses New Zealand's largest collection of Chinese material culture. This article summarizes the life of Alley, and depicting how he used artworks as a means of raising New Zealanders' general awareness of China, with an underlying political motive.
