Ina Asim. The Lantern Festival Panels in the Norton Museum of Art

The centerpiece of the Norton Museum of Art’s new Chinese galleries will be six newly
restored Ming dynasty wall hangings showing the Lantern Festival—a favorite topic in
genre painting. The paintings, which were acquired in Japan in the mid-20th century,
formed part of the collection of Harold Mediil Sarkisian for almost half a century.
Conservation has allowed for these paintings to be presented once again in their full
splendor. In this article, Ina Asim offers key insights into their historical and cultural
contexts.
