Kang Soyon. Syncretism in an Immortal Painting at Buckhon Art Museum

This article for our ‘Object in Focus’ series discusses a painting of an Immortal in
Bukchon Art Museum, Seoul. Initially appearing to belong to the genre of Daoist
immortal paintings, the work also displays aspects of paintings featuring Buddhist
arhats. Through a comparative study, the article posits that the painting is thus a
masterpiece of the first half of the Joseon period showing syncretized Daoist and
Buddhist characteristics, moreover, that it served as an early model of the Mountain
God or arhat paintings that were enshrined at Buddhist temples in the latter half of the
Joseon period.
