Abigail Hykin. Guanyin: New Discoveries and Old Companions at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

The abundance of fine examples of Song and Yuan art at the Museum of Fine Arts,
Boston prompted the decision in 2016 to create a new gallery dedicated to the arts of
this era. The rotating display presents ceramics, paintings, lacquer and textiles, all
presided over by one of the museum’s most adored sculptures, a wood Guanyin from
Shanxi province. In preparing the Guanyin for its installation in the new gallery, MFA
conservators carried out a treatment to stabilize the fragile painted surface and worked
with conservation scientists, art historians and other specialists to perform an in-depth
technical study of the sculpture and its complex history. The article discusses the new
findings revealed during the process.
