Nancy Berliner. From Bits and Pieces: Constructing a Biography for a Lost Talent

In 1892, the artist Sun Mingqiu (1823–?), already of some notoriety in Beijing for his
masterful bapo paintings, ‘painting of paintings’ on a round fan, a depiction of older
artworks incorporating some of his own textual reflections and an innovative decorative
framing device. From our contemporary perspective, Sun had taken an aesthetic and
conceptual leap in creating this artwork within which paintings and calligraphies are in
conversation with one another across time, and in dialogue with the artist who is in turn
in conversation with the viewer. By further exploring Sun’s output and his visual
development, we can gain a deeper understanding of the man, the art form and its
place in Chinese art history.
