Yuka Kadoi. Book Review: Magic and Divination in Malay Illustrated Manuscripts by Farouk Yahya
Magic and Divination in Malay Illustrated Manuscripts is the sixth volume in Brill’s successful series ‘Arts and Archaeology of the Islamic World’ (AAIW) and the first monograph devoted to the study of Islamic art in Southeast Asia. Lavishly illustrated with more than 300 figures, mostly in colour, and densely footnoted (in total 175), its aim appears straightforward—the study of magical or divinatory images in Malay manuscripts. However, the outcome of the author’s long-term, painstaking research into a hitherto understudied aspect of Islamic manuscript culture is clearly manifested in every page of this groundbreaking monograph.
