Soyoung Lee. A Pictorial Journey through the Diamond Mountains
An arresting painting recently acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art that depicts one of the most iconic natural wonders on the Korean peninsula will debut to the public early next year in a special exhibition titled ‘Diamond Mountains: Travel and Nostalgia in Korean Art’ (7 February–20 May 2018) (Fig. 1). Painted in the mid-19th century by the literati artist Sin Hakgwon (1785–1866), this work presents an impressive panoramic view of the Diamond Mountains, located in Gangwon province in today’s North Korea. Rocky peaks and verdant hills envelop viewers on their visual journey through this grand and enchanting landscape.
