Fiji’s Masi Culture

Dutch Attack on Macau

Cover. The goddess of mercy, or Kuan Yin (in Cantonese Kun Yam), woodblock-printed and then hand-colored at a pre-WW II printing center in northern China, Chinese folk religion paper gods can still be found, newly machine-printed, in Hongkong, Taiwan and the various overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. But few can approximate the aesthetic qualities of the pre-war prints. This Kuan Yin is among the few old stencil-style design that approaches abstract expressionism or sometimes surrealism.
