China: a Time to Love

Asian Ivory Art (II)

Cover. A Ching Dynasty mandarin with his snuff bottle. It was the custom among members of the imperial court and high officials to carry snuff bottles in the folds of their sleeves. When they met friends, they exchanged greetings and with a profound bow offered their brand of snuff. It was a fashionable hobby to collect snuff bottles. Gifts of snuff bottles were often exchanged. This issue looks at some of the finest examples of Ching Dynasty bottles extant which are featured in an exhibition set up by the Hongkong Museum of Art.
