The Blessing of a Thang-ka

Chaste Beauty of Ting Ware

Roe and the Mughals

Cover. The religious paintings of Tibetan Buddhism, thang-ka, are among Asia’s most wildly colorful graphic designs. Some thang-ka, like this piece – photograph courtesy of the Werner Forman Archive, London – are laid out and colored in quiet proportions. Thang-ka made by lama artists or by lamas and infused with spirituality through rituals are – to the Tibetans and tibetized peoples of Bhutan, Sikkim and parts of India – sacred objects to be treated with reverence and not merely used as aids to meditation, much less as decorations.
