Cover. A profound appreciation of nature is an essential part of the Japanese character, and nowhere is this more evident than in Japanese art. Throughout the centuries Japanese artists have delighted in celebrating the creatures of nature. One of the most popular of the celebrants was Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795), a detail of whose hanging scroll, Phoenixes, appears on our cover. Okyo’s scroll was one of 140 works recently exhibited at a special show organized for the UCLA Art Council by Harold P. Stern, Director of the Freer Gallery of Art.
