Cover. The master of a Portuguese trading ship leads a procession of his merchant compatriots in the main street of a Japanese port city. Detail from a nanban byobu, “southern barbarian screes”, by a sixteenth-century Japanese artists. Nanban screens are an important aspect of Japanese art both for their aesthetic and historical value. Although few Japanese chronicles mention the European presence in Japan, Japanese artists painted their flamboyant guests with much fondness and attention to detail. The screen from which this detail is taken is by courtesy of the Nanban Bunka-kan, Osaka.
