The vast range of well-preserved artefacts and documents found at the oasis of Turfan in the Xinjiang Uigher Autonomous Region of China has given scholars the opportunity to re-examine and rewrite the history of the Silk Road. Following the Third Silk Road Conference held at Yale University from 10 to 12 July 1998, five papers were selected, with the assistance of the organizer Valerie Hansen, and adapted for publication in this issue.
