Cover. The bird's head ewer is a common, if striking, T'ang dynasty ceramic design imported from Western Asia. To the T'ang potter, the Sassanian ewer with hinged metal cap suggested a bird's head, and he soon made it into one. It is also possible that the ewer had a Mediterranean origin. The aperture at the top of the head served as the pouring spout. Photographed by Dinshaw Balsara, from a private collection in Hongkong.
