Modern Art of China
History: The Great Khans

COVER. Mask of a rishi, or hermit. It has a gilded face and a crown cast in bronze. Masks like these are worn by Thailand's Khon dancers. Khon is one of the Thai classical schools of dancing. The rishi is given much respect as a teacher of the classic dances. In the Ramakien, the Thai version of the Ramayana, rishi are mentioned as mystical beings who do not have definite allegiances to either antagonist. Courtesy, National Museum, Bangkok.
