The Archetypal Tourist

A marionette exhibited behind a fence (temes nevinbur) in Southeast Malekula, New Hebrides, in Melanesia. Dolls of grotesque beauty like this are made of skulls modeled over with vegetable paste to resemble the faces of dead men. Modeling is done on skulls, rolls of leaves, coconuts and other fruit, and pieces of soft wood that can support a human head. Photo courtesy of Musee de I'Homme, Paris.
