Cover. Detail, showing a Burmese king and his court in a gilded barge, from a rare acquisition of the Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta. The scroll is a long painting divided into sections and panels. Burmese artists of the Toungoo dynasty are believed to have made this scroll a century ago. The discovery of the Burmese Scroll upsets the long-held belief that paneled painting is a monopoly of Sinic art.
