Cover. Portrait of Husayn Zarin Qalam, a celebrated calligrapher at the court of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, and his youthful pupil, Manohar, who was to become a master of Mughal painting. India 990 H. (1581 A.D.). H. 21 cm. W. 32 cm. This painting is appended to a manuscript of the Gulistan of Manohar, painted when he must have been about 15. In Islamic art, portraits of calligraphers or painters are very rare.
