Thomas Lawton. The Stoclets: Their Milieu And Their Collection
Discussions of Adolphe Stoclet (1871-1949) and his wife Suzanne Stevens Stoclet (1874-1949) invariably begin by stressing their quite different backgrounds. The Stoclet family’s wealth came from the Société Générale de Belgique (SGB), for many years one of the largest companies in Belgium, which owned enterprises including banks, arms producers and mines in the Belgian Congo. Adolphe trained as a civil engineer and on the death of his father Victor (1843-1904), assumed the directorship of the SGB.
