Joanie Meharry. The Museum of Kabul: A Revival
On the outskirts of Kabul, the National Museum of Afghanistan stands in distinguished solitude, having undergone a period of great prosperity followed by an equally profound period of destruction. Thus, the Afghan and US governments’ recent proposal to rebuild the museum provides an opportunity to reinvigorate Afghanistan’s cultural heritage. Yet, as US troops wind down their presence and Afghan forces take the helm with no indication of an abating Taliban insurgency, the question of how the project is implemented will determine whether the museum will prosper amid yet another precarious political transition.
