Medium is a fundamental category used by art historians to identify and group objects, as any object label in a museum will reveal. Labeling an object as ceramic, painting or photograph might at first appear to be the most straightforward method of categorizing a work of art. Yet, as the workshop ‘Impossible Purities: Modern East Asian Art and the Question of Artistic Medium’ made evident, the concept Sept 2012 p125-126of medium is complex and elusive, and entangled in a web of issues, such as materiality, identity and ideology.
