Li Xinping
Osage Soho, 45 Caine Road, L/G Shop 1, Corner Old Bailey St, Soho, Central, Hong Kong
Until 31 August 2010
A solo exhibition featuring 12 new works by the Beijing based artist. In these recent works, Li Xinping shifts his focus towards the broader theme of science and nature by microscopically examining the miniscule details generated from dissected images and mirrored reflections of warped body parts. In the Tentacle and Image series (2010), vibrant colours and irregular shapes are juxtaposed to create stimulating geometric visuals reminiscent of radiating cells. Other works such as Gust (2009) and Cry Out (2009) retain Li's figural approach to express natural phenomenon and human emotion, with the latter bearing a comical touch within.

Honeymoon: Paintings by Yao Jui-chung
Hanart T Z Gallery, Room 202, Henley Building, 5 Queen’s Road, Central, Hong Kong
Until 28 September 2010
An exhibition of new paintings by Taiwanese artist Yao Jui-chung. Yao’s “Honeymoon” series is a continuation of the previous series “Dreamy” (2009) and “Romance” (2009). “Dreamy” Series is a depiction of the longing of middle-aged men for the fleshly pleasures they knew in their youth. He has substituted a hard-tipped drafting pen for a classical brush to create traditional landscape in “Honeymoon” series. Shading with the drafting pen is not done by varying the amount of water but rather by building up lines on the coarse paper, creating a multitude of lines that have a nervous quality which results in a flattening illusion. Yao uses handmade Khadi paper from India instead of traditional thin xuan paper. When gold leaf is used on the surface of this apper it does not appear overly flashy or vulgar, but instead has the natural charm and rustic feel of a shrine mural.

Bad Taste - Chen Fei Solo Exhibition
Schoeni Art Gallery, 21 - 31 Old Bailey Street, Central, Hong Kong
3 September – 2 October 2010

The combination of colours and patterns – often involving special sequence, composition and minute details – employed by Chen is also notable and unique. Many of Chen Fei’s pieces revolve around his everyday life, which mainly consists of his girlfriend and his dog, as he himself often refers himself as “a family man”.
Intimacy - Carol Lee Mei Kuen
10 Chancery Lane Gallery, G/F 10 Chancery Lane, SoHo, Central, Hong Kong
9 – 30 September 2010
On view are Carol Lee Mei Kuen’s latest works on paper in which she continues her diary journal to reflect her very own philosophy of life. Lee uses a technique called “time painting’, which was originated from the principles of photograms. She places objects onto newsprint papers under the sun, intending to use the portrayal of light to record the passing of time. Newsprint yellows on the surface as time goes by. Patterns of shading and fading are therefore transferred through the objects and ‘projected’ onto the paper. This process produces an astonishing aesthetic effect, creating images described as ‘minimalist, elegant, serious and reflecting’.
At the same time, the artist will launch her new book which documents her capture of time from 2005 until today.
Drama 2000-2010 - Ann Niu

Working with acrylic, Ann shows her heavy brushwork with swollen and coiling lines on large canvases whereas when working with ink and paper, Ann portraits elegant, fluid, cursive, soft and delicate female figures through her veteran calligraphic brushwork and lines. At the same time, Ann expresses her passionate sentiments through her vibrant and vivid colours. All these contrasts and similarities suggest the diverse personality of Ann developed from her multicultural experiences when living in China, Japan, Korea and the U.S.
Broken Fantasies - Ozawa Sakae
Amelia Johnson Contemporary, G/F 6-10 Shin Hing Street, NoHo, Central, Hong Kong
16 September – 23 October 2010
In her paintings Ozawa Sakae depicts children in innocent pursuits such as fishing or playing in the snow, forests are recreated as magical landscapes, animals such as bears, stags or owls assume human-like composure, splashes of colour in the inky night skies shimmer like fireworks, fireflies or stars. All come together to create playful, joyous and naively enchanting works. It is only through closer inspection that there is a darker side, a sense of unease that pervades the beauty and a feeling that all is not all right in the forest. Sakae’s use of unshaded black as a background colour serves as a perfect foil to the adjoining white and pale colours. The jewel-like colours serve to intensify the sense of fantasy in these unreal landscapes. And it is against these dramatic and bold backdrops that her characters play out their parts. Through her use of colour and magical realism Ozawa Sakae has created works that are both intriguing and captivating.

Road to Joseon - Lee Sanghyun
Amelia Johnson Contemporary, G/F 6-10 Shin Hing Street, NoHo, Central, Hong Kong
28 October – 27 November 2010
At first glance, and especially to a Western audience, Lee Sanghyun’s recent photographs and videos may simply evoke stereotypical clichés of a highly technical, hybridized contemporary Korean society. Works that seem to perfectly blend with the hyper-reality of a world marked by a profusion of images, symbols, ideas and concepts of a society that went through brutal change in the last hundred and fifty years. Lee’s digitally montaged imagery is made in vivid, bright pop colours depicting fictitious and historical scenes, juxtaposing past and present, the West and the East, nature and industrialization, rational and irrational, mass culture and traditional landscapes, good and bad, male and female. Many histories and mythologies, including the artist's own, are intertwined but there is more than meets the eye for Lee likes to cross boundaries and go beyond traditional dichotomies. Unsolved mystery, nostalgia, dream-like imagery, science fiction: Lee engages a variety of atmospheres to unhinge his pictures from their contemporary reality.
