China's 1800s: Material and Visual Culture

Discover more about China's culture in the 1800s, including painting, calligraphy, commerce, fashion, and decorative arts in this two-day conference.

This two-day conference will offer participants a chance to hear from more than 30 speakers about the material and visual culture of the last century of imperial China.

There will be four sessions each day, with the topics as follows.

Day 1 – Thursday 8 June

  1. Painting and patronage

  2. Calligraphy and seal carving

  3. Vernacular painting and prints

  4. Maps, money and magic lanterns

In the evening there will be a keynote lecture from Susan Naquin, Professor Emerita of History at Princeton University, 'Reconsidering China's 19th Century.'

Day 2 – Friday 9 June

  1. Commerce and fashion

  2. Textiles

  3. Decorative arts

  4. Craft technology and the environment

  • The event will be held at the BP Lecture Theatre at the British Museum.

  • Please note that this event will be held at full capacity without social distancing measures in place. Face coverings are recommended for the protection of yourself and others, unless you're exempt. 

  • Registration will start at 08.50 in the Clore Education Centre Foyer and the event will begin at 09.25.

  • Tea and coffee will be provided.
